The Boston Sprinter is a prominent route add-on within the Train Sim World franchise, originally introduced as a core component of Train Sim World 2: Rush Hour. It is now available and fully compatible with the latest titles in the series, such as Train Sim World 5, typically listed under the name Northeast Corridor: Boston – Providence.
Route Overview
The add-on simulates a realistic and busy section of the Northeast Corridor:
- Main Route: The route spans approximately 43 miles (70 km) connecting Boston South Station, Massachusetts, to Providence Station, Rhode Island.
- Branch: It includes a small 4-mile (7 km) branch line that runs from Canton Junction to Stoughton.
- Atmosphere: Designed to capture the essence of a busy “Rush Hour,” the gameplay focuses on a mix of high-speed inter-city services (with in-game speeds up to 125 mph) and frequent regional commuter operations with high passenger volumes.
- Scenery: The journey features varied scenery, moving from urban sprawl to modern suburbia and countryside, and includes notable landmarks like the historic Canton Viaduct.
Included Rolling Stock
The standard add-on package provides two primary train sets with authentic liveries:
- Amtrak ACS-64 Electric Locomotive: Utilized for Northeast Regional services, paired with Amfleet passenger cars.
- MBTA F40PH-3C Diesel Locomotive: Used for commuter services with MBTA single-deck cars and a cab car to facilitate push-pull operations.
Compatibility and Availability
Dovetail Games ensures that purchased content remains accessible across different game iterations:
- Original Release: Launched as “Rush Hour – Boston Sprinter” for TSW 2.
- Game Upgrades: The route was enhanced for TSW 3 with the game’s improved volumetric sky and lighting systems.
- Current Availability: Through backward/forward compatibility features (sometimes referred to as “Smart Delivery” for certain platforms), the content carries forward to newer versions like TSW 5 as “Northeast Corridor: Boston – Providence”.
Players can expand their experience by purchasing additional compatible locomotive add-ons, such as the high-speed Amtrak Acela trainset or the MBTA HSP46 diesel locomotive, to introduce more service variety on the line.
